Are You Feeling Demotivated? This is What I Do to Get Up and Keep Going
Written by: Chené C. from The Virtual Desk
As a Virtual Assistant, or any freelancer for that matter, you don’t have the “luxury” of an angry boss waiting for you at the office door. While this freedom is fantastic, it can also make you your own worst enemy. Hitting that snooze button five times or getting easily distracted becomes dangerously tempting. However, this isn’t a sustainable path to success for you or your business.
Setting the Right Morning Tone is Key
How do you ensure a productive and motivated start to your day? Here’s a glimpse into my morning routine and some suggestions for you:
- Create a Realistic Routine:
- Don’t over-complicate it! A general outline of your day, including deadlines, is sufficient.
- Hydrate and Breathe: Begin your day with a refreshing glass of water (add lemon for an extra boost!). Enjoy a cup of coffee, tea, or matcha while taking a few moments to breathe in the fresh air.
- Start with Positivity:
- Read a few affirmations or write down something that makes you happy (a child’s laugh, a cat cuddle, a stranger’s smile).
- If affirmations aren’t your thing, dedicate 30 minutes before 7:45 AM to a favourite hobby – reading, gaming, gardening, yoga – anything that brings you joy.
- Find Your Focus Music:
- Create a dedicated playlist on Spotify or find calming YouTube videos to enhance your concentration. I’ve found this incredibly helpful for early mornings.
Spotify Playlists: ADHD focus music 2025 & crystal healing music

Proactive Strategies for Success
- Don’t Procrastinate: Completing tasks last-minute will inevitably crush your motivation.
- Prioritize Breaks:
- Research shows that consistent breaks significantly improve health and performance.
- Take a walk, jog, or enjoy a relaxing activity like gardening or cycling to boost your mood and energy.
- Set Boundaries:
- Establish clear boundaries and communicate them to others.
- Dedicate specific days as weekends or personal days and stick to them.
- Designate work hours and minimize distractions during those times (personal texts, family interruptions).
Key Takeaways
- Be Realistic and Mindful: Set achievable daily goals.
- Prioritize Self-Care: Take time to breathe and recharge.
- Break Bad Habits: Identify and address any procrastination or distraction patterns.
By incorporating these strategies into your routine, you can cultivate a more productive and fulfilling freelance career.
