VAASA Code of Ethics
Our Code of Ethics
Setting the Standard for Professional Virtual Assistance in South Africa
Our Code of Ethics establishes the professional standards expected of every VAASA member. Membership represents more than belonging to an association — it reflects a commitment to conducting business responsibly, protecting clients, continuously developing professional expertise, and contributing positively to the reputation and growth of the Virtual Assistance profession.
As a VAASA member, I commit to:
1. Act with Integrity and Professionalism
I will conduct myself with honesty, integrity, fairness and professionalism in all my business and professional dealings.
I will be truthful in how I represent my services, experience, qualifications, capabilities and professional relationships.
2. Put Clients’ Interests First
I will act in the best interests of my clients and provide services with care, diligence and professionalism.
I will communicate clearly, meet agreed commitments and treat every client with respect, regardless of the size or value of the engagement.
3. Protect Confidentiality and Privacy
I will protect all confidential, personal, financial, business and proprietary information entrusted to me by clients or other parties.
I will not disclose, misuse or exploit confidential information for personal benefit or in any way that could disadvantage a client or another party.
4. Maintain Professional Boundaries
I will avoid situations, agreements or business practices that create conflicts of interest or could compromise my independence, professional judgement or the interests of my clients.
Where a potential conflict arises, I will disclose it openly and take appropriate steps to resolve it.
5. Respect Intellectual Property and Ownership
I will respect the intellectual property, content, systems, materials, data and resources belonging to my clients, colleagues and other professionals.
I will not claim ownership of work that does not belong to me or use another person’s work without appropriate permission or acknowledgement.
6. Commit to Continuous Professional Development
I recognise that excellence requires continuous learning.
I will actively develop and maintain my knowledge, skills, technology awareness and professional competencies so that I can provide relevant, efficient and high-quality services in an evolving digital workplace.
7. Uphold Quality and Accountability
I will take responsibility for the quality of my work and for meeting the professional commitments I make.
Where I make a mistake or encounter a problem, I will communicate honestly, take responsibility and make reasonable efforts to correct the situation.
8. Conduct Business Ethically
I will not knowingly participate in illegal, fraudulent, deceptive, discriminatory or unethical activities.
I will operate my business in accordance with applicable laws, regulations and accepted professional standards.
9. Respect Fellow Professionals
I will treat fellow Virtual Assistants, colleagues, suppliers, clients and other professionals with courtesy and respect.
I will not deliberately undermine, misrepresent, harass or unfairly discredit another professional or business.
I will recognise that a strong Virtual Assistance industry is built through collaboration, professionalism and mutual respect.
10. Represent VAASA Responsibly
As a VAASA member, I understand that my conduct may influence how clients and the public perceive VAASA and the Virtual Assistance profession.
I will conduct myself in a manner that reflects positively on VAASA and contributes to building a respected, trusted and professional Virtual Assistance industry in South Africa.
11. Contribute to the Growth of the Profession
I will support the advancement and professionalisation of the Virtual Assistance industry by sharing knowledge where appropriate, encouraging professional standards and contributing positively to the wider VA community.
I will strive to be an ambassador for professional Virtual Assistance in South Africa.
